The Origins of LGRIN

Long before LGRIN, there were the fundamental concepts and mathematics for GRIN (Gradient Refractive Index), LGRIN’s precursor, which was invented by James Maxwell (1831–1879). He formulated a set of equations known as Maxwell’s equations. In the 1950s Harold Hopkins and Narinder Kapany pioneered the use of multiple glass lenses to correct optical aberrations in high-quality imaging systems. This work and more is what paved the way to allow for better and more specialized optics.

The serendipitous start to the development of LGRIN began over 20 years ago through the collaboration of researchers from DARPA, Naval Research Lab (NRL), Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), and the Department of Energy (DOE). 

In 2002, researchers at CWRU presented the first draft of NanoPlex, a revolutionary translucent metamaterial. At the same conference, CWRU's team met with NRL's optics experts who were working on GRIN and other optics programs. This meeting sparked the idea of combining NanoPlex's unique layering capabilities with gradient refractive index (GRIN) optics models, and this convergence gave birth to the LGRIN concepts that power Peak’s HawkAI-designed lenses today.
